Notes from building models out of matchsticks

Materials

Matchstick modelling is unusual in that the material is nearly free and almost all of the cost is time. That changes the calculus: it is worth spending money on anything that saves cutting, sorting or clamping.

Sticks

Three things get called matchsticks and they behave differently.

Craft matchsticks, headless

Sold in bags of a few thousand for pennies, usually aspen or poplar, nominally 2 mm square and 45 mm long. This is what you want for structure. The nominal dimension is optimistic — expect variation of a couple of tenths of a millimetre, which matters once you start laminating.

Household matches

Cheaper still if you already have them, but the heads have to come off and the wood is often softer and more prone to splitting. De-heading with side cutters is fast per match and unbearable across a whole model. If you must, snap rather than cut: a snapped end is rough but square, and a cut end tends to crush.

Craft splints and coffee stirrers

Flat splints, roughly 100 × 10 × 2 mm, are not matchsticks but they are the right material for decking, gussets and anything wide and thin. Stirrers are thinner again and useful for cladding. Both are birch and noticeably stronger along the grain than matchsticks.

Sorting and grading

This sounds fussy and is the single highest-value habit I picked up. Pour a bag onto a tray and sort into three piles: straight and clean, usable but bowed, and rejects with knots or split ends. On a typical bag that comes out around 70 / 25 / 5. Straight sticks go into anything that carries load or shows; bowed ones go inside laminations where the neighbours hold them straight; rejects become test pieces for glue and finish.

PVA does almost everything. The important discipline is quantity: a joint between two 2 mm sticks needs a smear you can barely see. Squeeze-out is not a sign of a strong joint, it is a sign of a joint that will need sanding and will still show through finish.

Boards, formers and clamps

Build on something flatter than the model needs to be. A sheet of 6 mm MDF or a glass offcut is ideal; the self-healing cutting mat you cut on is not, because it takes a set. Formers can be cut from cereal box card for curves and from scrap MDF where they take load. For clamps, small bulldog clips, elastic bands and ordinary dressmaking pins pushed into a cork board will cover nearly everything — spring clamps are almost always too strong and crush the wood.

Finish

Bare aspen goes grey and fingerprints show. A single thin coat of dewaxed shellac seals it, dries in minutes and does not raise the grain the way a water-based finish will. Wax over the top if you want a sheen. Avoid anything that soaks in heavily: a matchstick model is mostly glue lines and end grain, and end grain drinks.
